Winterizing Your Rain Barrel
In York Region, where temperatures can dip below freezing, it is very important to winterize your rain barrel. Before the first frost it is recommended by the manufacturer to discontinue use, and follow these simple steps to best maintain the care of your rain barrel.
1. Open the faucet to drain most of the water.
2. Remove the lid and tip the barrel to empty any residual water.
NOTE: The overflow hose can remain connected.
| 3. Clean both the lid and barrel using a brush with some dishwashing liquid and |

warm water. |
4. Thoroughly clean the screen by running a hose onto it from the underside of the lid.
| 5. Store the barrel upside down, so the water cannot re-accumulate. You may want to put |
| a rock on top to prevent it from blowing around if you are leaving the unit |
| outside. |
| 6. The downspout can be left as is to run onto the concrete paver or you can re-connect it |
|
to the ground storm drain (local regulations permitting).
